Nine-Banded Armadillo - This is the only species of armadillo found in the United States. It has a hard, stiff shell which consists of nine narrow bands that slide upon one another. This mammal can grow to a length of 2 feet and can weigh up to 15 pounds. The armadillo's diet consists of insects, earthworms, spiders and and snails.
